It's no wonder people struggle to see through the mass of confusing advice and health myths out there. That's why we're here to do it for you. Stand corrected !
You've heard this myth everywhere, but who first recommended it? The source of this myth is thought to be a 1945 article from the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Research Council in the US. The article claims that a suitable allow-ance of water intake for adults is 2.5 litres a day, although the last sentence of the article notes that much of that water is already contained in the food we eat. If you ignore the last part of the statement you’d interpret this statement as a mandate to drink 2.5 litres, or eight glasses, of water per day. The National Research Council had it right. You get much of the fluid you need in the foods you eat. Existing studies suggest that the often-omitted fact is the key to understanding water intake and that there is no scientific evidence to mandating that you need to drink eight glasses a day. Furthermore drinking too much water can cause water intoxication, a severe electrolyte imbalance during which cells swell with excess fluid.
